Why is diesel 'better' ?

Because diesel can be produced from sources other then oil like plant matter making it renewable and the emissions of bio-diesel tends to be less harmful for people health.

Add to this the fact that most diesels can nearly double their gasoline volume-equivalent engines in fuel economy and easier maintenance and you have a damn good engine.
